Amuse-bouche
Emilia-Romagna is not only one of the most important and culturally rich regions in Northern Italy; it is one of those places I always want to return to. Every new trip is a fresh experience. It is so much more than Parmigiano Reggiano, mortadella and prosciutto, tortellini in brodo, aceto balsámico or Lambrusco: it is where the heart beats to the rhythm of a Raffaella Carrà song and memory begins to fill with recollections.
We were driving on the highway from Modena to Bologna. We had left late, and had less than two hours to reach the airport. With time working against us, we resigned ourselves to canceling the lunch we had reserved at a famous osteria in the city, but we didn't want to say goodbye to Italy without one last meal. Noon was approaching, and we didn't have many options left: find something along the way or eat at the airport. osteria de la ciudad, pero no queríamos despedirnos de Italia sin una última comida. Se acercaba el mediodía y no nos quedaban muchas opciones: encontrar algo en el camino o comer en el aeropuerto.
In a matter of minutes, we checked gastronomic guides, online recommendations, rankings and listings, but everything we found was too many kilometers away, and time was running out. In a desperate attempt, we turned to a map of the area and followed our intuition: un antico ristorante dal 1870A small detour, and we would arrive. More than 100 years of history, there must be a reason, we thought; or it would be an act of faith, I mused.
Despite its name evoking tradition and countryside, that place was not a rustic agriturismo. It was something more audacious. From the very first moment, our hunch was confirmed. We were in the right place. Every step of the menu was a revelation, an encounter, the manifesto of a cuisine with intention. What appeared to be a frozen olivewas, for me, an authentic awakening. I can still feel the explosion of flavor in my mouth: liquid, intense, cold, salty, and happy.
It was the surprise, La Grande Bellezza, and the unpretentious honesty that provoked this epiphany in me. What is essential? What is truly worth telling? In that ancient stable, almost by chance, the answer arrived. Without the artifice of luxury and far from the blah blah blah ok likes,I understood that the reunion was with pure emotion. Five years, countless experiences, hundreds of places, and a new starting point: The simple joy of discovery, of the unexpected, of what makes us human. That is what I am going to tell.
